kde in some of the distros has a services applet which will let you set
which daemons/servers run all the time. Look in the control panel.

the manual way is to check the symlinks in your default runlevel. If
you are on a deb based system look in /etc/rc2.d

K20foo -> ../init.d/foo
S20foo -> ../init.d/foo

The K enry is fine it means that the server will not run. The S entries
are the startup entries. you can remove any S entries that you don't
want to run or rename them to KXXfoo.

WARNING!!! you can cripple your system by turning off critical services
that are needed. make sure you know what you are turning off. Use
google to research them if you have to.
