Can someone help me understand this? It has been driving me up a wall
looking for a cause and/or solution. What is described below happened with
the old hardware as well. I had finally decided to update my wireless AP
hoping it would solve the issue and support some new projects.
Today I replaced my old Linksys 802.11b wireless AP/router/4 port switch
with a Linksys WRT54G (sorry, thought I had bought the GL but...). I
configured it to use 128 bit WEP instead of the 64 bit I had been using. I
also got my TiVo wireless to talk to it as well as a Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP
Ethernet converter.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my Toshiba 5105-S701 with built-in
802.11b to talk to the linksys AP under either Ubuntu 6.06 or Windows XP
Home (it dual boots). The Toshaba DOES talk to open WiFi nets and to the
managed WiFi down at the installfest. I have checked and rechecked the WEP
keys, channel settings and so forth to no avail. Oh and looking at
/var/log/syslog shows the device seems to support 104 bit WEP which I
understand somehow is supposed to wotk with 128 bit as well (don't ask me, I
found it in two manuals).
I have read on some web sites that WEP has evolved somewhat including the
encryption algorythm. I am tentatively assuming that the Toshiba uses some
denigrated form of hardware encryption and that is why it is not working.
The fly in the ointment is that it DOES work down at the installfest. Hence
my confusion.
