I'm not an expert, it always takes me a few rounds of tweaking the config
file to get things like I want, but the suggestions I would have are first to
make sure it's detecting your monitor correctly, and second to look at the
server log (with xorg its something like /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I haven't used
xfree for a while, but I assume it has a similar log. This can get very long,
but sometimes you can see why it isn't using the mode you expect.
