Subject: Re: funneling heat away from the inside of a box
I had a heat problem as well and lost a drive to the heat. My solution
(condensed):

1. Installed external thermometers from Fry's - $13 each - and attached
the sensors to the CB of the drives.

2. Bought hard drive coolers - again from Fry's. I thought the 2 fan
ones would be best - they were junk. Replaced them with the cooler with
the biggest fan I could find. Can't remember the mfr - sorry - but it
was a major name like thermaltake.

3. The case has 7 fans already (4 in front, one on side, 2 in back. I
reversed the airflow on the one on the side to push air in instead of
blowing it out.

4. Placed a room fan near the computer (it's in a closet) to blow cool
air into the closet.

5. Set up a script that uses smartctl to alert me when the temperature
of the drives got too hot. The script checks the drive temp every 5
minutes.

Have not had a problem since I did #2, and #3.
