Subject: Re: Postfix and SMTP authentication headache
I'm afraid I'm no help with postfix, as I use a qmail-toaster server.

That being said, I'm wondering, why are you relaying through earthlink? Why
not go straight out to the destination? Then you answer, because some
destination servers won't accept mail from a dynamic IP address. Then I say,
I ran into this problem too, so I use DynDNS's outbound mailhop service for
those destinations. Which brings us back to the same problem, how to get
smtp-auth (needed for mailhop too) working on postfix? I'm afraid I'm no
help here.

I'm wondering, though, if earthlink might not like the sender domain. I
tried using qwest's server(s) to relay, and they require the sender (from,
actually) domain to be the same as theirs. IOW, sender (envelope) and from
(body) must both say earthlink (or in my case qwest). It'd be worth a test
to see if it works that way.

I realize that the error message is not indicative of this being the
problem, but error messages can sometimes be misleading. If earthlink just
recently turned on authentication, wouldn't their server(s) have been open
relays previously? Well, not entirely open, as they might have restricted
access to their network, but partially open none the less.

I seem to be rambling, so I'll go now. Good luck with your problem.
