save any necessary documents and log out (if possible) and log back in.

If log out is not possible <Control><Alt><Shift><Backspace>

kills XWindows

log back in

If after login, problem remains...log out

Get root shell

cd /users_home_directory_with_problem

mv .gnome .gnome-bak
mv .gnome2 .gnome2-bak

then log in.

If you need application data/settings, you will have to copy them back
later from the 'bak' files that you just created.
