Well, it was a gateway :).
Seriously, I've been using only GNU/Linux on my laptops for almost 10
years. In the last couple of years that includes several Thinkpads (
mostly T30 ) and now a Dell Latitude.
Knoppix and Ubuntu have rocked whenever I've installed them. Wireless,
sound, pcmcia and usb drive detection have all worked out of the box. I
think X has as well, but might've had to tweak that.
Be careful of chipsets for wireless and modem. The rest of the hardware
should work just fine. Video might not work at top capabilities, but
non-gamers probably won't notice.
If she has peripherials like printer, scanner, etc. do some research on
them.

AOL might be difficult.
penggy - connects to AOL via modem or TCP/IP
Never tried that. It's in Ubuntu and debian.
I've been using gaim for AOL IM for a couple of years. It's worked great
except that I hate instant messengers :). For that it's been great because
I can config it to be fairly unobtrusive.

AOL intentionally makes it hard to get contacts back out. If they're
available via a web interface write a screen scraper.
If they can only be accessed via AOL's mail client be prepared to do a lot
of cutting and pasting :(.
