Actually that was one of the first (unfounded) fears of the general
public when hydrogen started to become addressed. Pictures of the
Hindenburg comes to mind! Hydrogen isn't as volatile as everyone
makes it out to be, honestly.
But, on that note, they are developing holding tanks that work on the
basis of being a "hydrogen sink". (think how the ocean is a carbon
sink) The hydrogen is extracted from the tanks as needed, and in the
case of an accident is safely contained.
Gasoline at a crash site scares me more than hydrogen... at least I
know hydrogen will just float away, quickly I might add :) The fumes
from gasoline linger around long enough that a cop lighting a
cigarette could set it off.
