People seem to be having luck just downloading the precompiled Linux i686
version distributed from:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/
dl to your home directory (~/)
untar the file and run the firefox script in the firefox directory which is
created when you untar it.
tar xvfz firefox-1.5b2.tar.gz
cd firefox
./firefox
My Ubuntu box is PPC so I can't test it for you at the moment but if it
doesn't work let me know.
