One could argue that iTunes, Sony SonicStage, etc. is just another form of
vendor lockin.

I like the philosophy of John Buckman at Magnatune (
http://www.magnatune.com/info/why). They offer a wide variety of music and
you can download in many different formats including ogg and flac.
