Subject: Re: webcam/camera combo
I'd be interested in finding out more here too. I'd like to use a webcam for
security type applications. Camstream lists a number of functional webcams,
but most of them are either sold in Europe, or horribly expensive. For the
most part, it seems to be a driver/chipset issue similar to the wireless Lan
card thing. Some chipsets seem to work, others don't, and the same model of
webcam might have either chipset. The STV0680 chipset is supposed to be
supported which was used in TONS of "Toy" Digital cams, but try to find out
what chipset you're getting before you buy it, if possible.
So far, I've bought a couple of cheapies just to try them out. My computer
recognizes them at the USB port, but that's about as far as it gets.
Here's what the MEPIS Info center tells me, (but it's all Greek to me):

Labtec WebCam

Class 255 (Vendor Specific Class)
Subclass 0
Protocol 0
USB Version 1.10

Vendor ID 0x46d (Logitech, Inc.)
Product ID 0x921 (Labtec WebCam)
Revision 0.01

Speed 12 Mbit/s
Channels 0
Max. Packet Size 0

Near as I can figure out, the computer is saying, "Yeah, I know it's there, I
just can't understand it".
