Thanks for the suggestion, but the pre-existence of formatted partitions
didn't help. I then tried Knoppix, my motto being, "if Knoppix can't
boot it, nobody can." Knoppix couldn't. After considerable thrashing
about and muttering, I discovered that the Abit doesn't seem to like my
SIIG SCSI card. The BIOS options seemed to be just about useless to
deal with that. The SIIG card insists on using IRQ 11, and its config
utility doesn't seem to have a way of changing that. The Abit's BIOS
can "reserve" an IRQ, but doing so prevents the SIIG from using it as
well. Suggestions, anyone?

P.S. The only changes I've made to the default Abit BIOS are:
1) Disable the SATA interface, since I'm not using it, and
2) Move the CD from the 2nd boot device to the 3rd.
