Thanks to all for the suggestions.
I have *arrived* with my Remote Desktop, so I don't need no stinkin
Windows no more.
I have a 1600x1200 desktop, on a 21" monitor. Unlike the Windows Remote
Desktop, this one does not cover my Gnome toolbar, so I changed the
command line to reduce the height a little -- now I see both toolbars,
including my desktop switcher at the bottom.
I will continue to re-visit my XP desktop, just to keep the updates and
virus and spyware scans up to date, but I will now be spending days at a
time in the Linux world, which of course means I'll be learning to
handle the little irritations like arrow-key misbehavior, so I'll be
more and more at home here. I'm over the hump!
BTW, my rdesktop command goes like this:
rdesktop -uvictor@work.com -g1580x1140 nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
Installation of rdesktop took a little creativity, since it was not
distro-specific:
1. I had to install an xorg library to provide two header files.
2. I had to fix the Makefile with a -L linker path to Xlib.
3. It couldn't resolve the Windows boxname, so I had to use an IP
address instead. S'arright, leases at the workplace last forever.
4. I did the install at the ~root directory and had to relocate the keymaps.
5. Oops - one of the Windows apps is having trouble "obtaining keyboard
ownership". Aah, that would be a conflict with an orphaned copy of
rdesktop that I started while VPN wasn't running.
Thanks again,
Vic
