You can retrieve your gmail via POP3 with any standard client. All the
info about it here:

http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=194

Configure your client to not delete the email from the google server
and/or configure your gmail account to keep all emails. Then your normal
client can use it and you still have the web interface if you want.

KMail works great with this.
