Subject: Re: OT: Old time BBS
There are still elements to BBS days that the Internet lacks. For
example...

The Internet is so big that you basically are traversing it mostly alone
and interacting with others consistently (other than say IRC or MUD)
is just not the same. A BBS was more localized and as such was a
"gathering" place of people.

The Internet is incredible because of it's global nature. However,
doing a get together with your friends in New Zealand isn't necessarily
economically feasible. BBS worlds were generally contained largely by
zip codes. Making meeting people in person much more of a reality.

The Internet has tons of online games, but they just don't have the same
spirit of competition. Nothing beats games you play against people you
know and interact with daily and require strategies where you can only
do one move or interaction per day because of limited resources.

The Internet is a great advance forward, but certainly it would be nice
to have some of the more homey features of the BBS world. I am
suprised that Internet BBS communities never really have been able to be
successful on some level. BBS plus Blog(livejournal, myspace, eg) might
make for interesting local community site...
