deleting and re-creating an empty mbox file could be a source of the
problem. The permissions...that I was speaking of.
Generally, mail programs will create the mbox/maildir stuff that it
needs as long as it is possible. If you need to create one yourself,
it's always better to cp -r ANOTHER_MBOX NEW_MBOX so it has the right
privileges.
Then of course, there really is no standard for naming these
things...one program may use 'Sent' another may use 'SENT' and we all
should know by now that Microsoft Mail clients all use 'Sent Items'
Lastly, you specifically mentioned 'POP' but on an IMAP server - the
'namespace' can be significant. Many IMAP servers do not allow a 'Sent'
folder at the root level but only as a 'sub-folder' of INBOX.
