Jay,
To make sure your laptop is compatible with *A* distro, you should download 
and burn a Live CD version such as Mepis or Ubuntu and run it and see if all 
your hardware will work with that particular distro. On some laptops power 
settings, Wi-Fi, sound and whatnot seem to get borked but others Just Work.
To avoid problems it would be safer to try to get one that will have you up 
and running in the shortest time. After you're comfortable with Linux you can 
choose something different or install that distro to your Hard Drive.
