Subject: convert syntax

Just discovered the *nix 'convert' utility, which seems to be
quite remarkable, but I can't figure out the syntax to achieve
the image size output that I want. I've tried -size -resize and
-geometry (all of which are suggested in various places), but
none of them seem to produce the desired result.

When I use this syntax: convert -size 200x300 file.pdf file.jpg
(or substituting -resize or -geometry), and no matter what sizes
I specify, I always get the same size image result which is
always too small but with more white space around the image
than was in the original pdf file.

What is the correct syntax to specify a larger image size?
