Actually, there is. I found it by typing "installing mepis without a cdrom" into Google. it was the first link --

Another way is to remove the hard drive from then ThinkPad and connect it to a desktop to install/or transfer the files. You can use an external USB box to connect the drive or there are adapters (cyberguys.com) that will connect a 2.5" drive to an 3.5" IDE ribbon cable.
