failed dvd burner (could cdrecord have caused this?)

ok,
my emprex dvd burner has decided to go total failure on me.

it happened after I attemtped to write a dvd (data dvd) in linux. the first
indication of a problem was when I received a fatal error during write (the
operation aborted and I was left with a coaster). after that point, I was no
longer able to read or write ANY media whatsoever.

I have since sent a message to the tech support folks and emprex.com (probably
won't hear back from them until monday).

is there a possibility that cdrecord (the pro-dvd version) could have damaged
the device?

anyone happen to know how to recover this device?

any other suggestions that don't involve my spending money I *don't* have?
