Craig actually figured out a somewhat interesting means to get online
late last night using a local jabberd server.
For anyone who's interested, here's the breakdown for the Psi and GAIM
clients.
Psi:
If you do not have a Jabber account, then set up an account with any
convenient Jabber server (there's a list of public servers at
http://www.jabber.org/user/publicservers.html)
Note: you do NOT have to have an account at the jabber.org server
to use their chatrooms, any Jabber ID will do, the servers will
handle the details from there
Bring your Jabber ID online
Select "Join Groupchat" from the main menu
For "Host" enter 'conference.jabber.org'
For "Room" enter 'plug'
For "Nickname" enter a value of your choosing
Click the "Join" button
A window will open into the conference
Thereafter, when you wish to rejoin the conference, you will be able
to select the plug conference from the "Recent" dropdown in the same
join dialog.
GAIM:
If you do not have a Jabber account, then set up an account with any
convenient Jabber server (there's a list of public servers at
http://www.jabber.org/user/publicservers.html)
Note: you do NOT have to have an account at the jabber.org server
to use their chatrooms, any Jabber ID will do, the servers will
handle the details from there
Bring your Jabber ID online
From the "Buddies" Menu, select "Add Chat"
For "Room" enter 'plug'
For "Server" enter 'conference.jabber.org'
For "Handle" enter the nickname you want for the conference
For "Password" leave this field blank
For "Alias" leave this field blank
Select a buddy group to put this chat reference in
Click the "Add" button
From then on, you can double-click the "Buddy" for that chat room,
and it'll open up the ongoing conference.
