Not to rekindle the world's oldest flame war (is there a bot that will kill this thread after ten posts?), but I have to agree with Craig. I've used vi in the past, but find I'm much more productive with anything other than simple text edits in emacs.

I'm using emacs at the moment to write a handbook using LaTEX (no, *not* latex.com. Don't even go there!) and emacs offers some very nice automation for entering and validating LaTEX tags. Finally kicked that nervous vi habit of hitting ESC constantly no matter what program I'm in! <g>
