This is a Linux base and there are millions of windows message bases. As
a Windows admin I will tell you that they all do the same thing more or
less...The current Internet Security packages, regardless of vendor not
only to Anti-Virus but also Firewall, Privacy (cookies and the like).
Some add things like spyware detection.
First of all - open IE and go to <
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com>
and install updates - keep going back there (restarting if necessary)
and installing the updates it recommends until it says there are no
updates for your computer. You can do email while it is working.
If the computer is still up to date, still running slow AND has current
anti-virus software, download and install (update first), Ad Aware
and/or Spy Bot Destroyer and then run it - they get rid of most spyware
and they are free.
Several companies offer free anti-virus for Windows (AVG) comes to mind.
There's no excuse to not have current anti-virus.
If you need a free firewall there's zonealarm. If your ip address
doesn't start with 10 or 172 or 192 you NEED to run a firewall - check
your ip address if you don't know by clicking start - run 'command' and
click OK. Type ipconfig and press return.
I have deliberately left off most of the URL's. You can get each one of
these mentioned softwares from
www.download.com - search those names -
hint - personal edition generally means free for home users, pro version
generally means get your credit card handy - more features, not free.
Let's not have this Linux message base descend into the Windows world of
which AV, firewall, privacy, spyware detection and removal tools work
best - please.
