package dependency is your friend :). Removing things might still drop
functionality you want, but due to package dependency at least it'll
remove all of the packages dependent on whatever you're removing. The
install/remove tools should also let you know what you're removing.

If you're removing something from the base system that will likely break
things in debian you will get a warning. Heed the warning :).
