Other than the fact that KDE will use arts and most others will use esd, I
don't think changing your window manager will have any effect.

I think gaim uses esd, so try telling mplayer to use esd as well.
If you have a config file in your .mplayer folder, just add 'ao=esd' I think.

Otherwise, you can do 'mplayer -ao esd' and it should hopefully pipe sound
through it, along with gaim. I don't know if gaim can be configured to use
arts. I don't think it particularly cares what you use.

If you are using kde, you can try 'artsdsp gaim' and with mplayer, tell it to
use arts instead of esd.
