I dislike it when people answer a question different than the one asked,
but I'm gonna do it anyway :).

First off, I dunno about trading it in, so I'm not much help there.

Have you tried to use arts, esd or another sound daemon? The sound daemon
would be the only thing talking to the sound card. Sound daemons can
listen to multiple applications at the same time, though.

The linux laptop howto used to point to a repository of links for people
who published their experiences with laptops. Maybe it has some links
that'll help you.

Don't know about the system and video card sharing RAM.
