Ubuntu - How to update programs?

Hi all,

So, Ubuntu installed very well, so far as I can see. But, it
pre-installed Firefox 0.9.3. Now, I know I could brute-force a Firefox
update (download tarball, compile, and make), but I don't know if
that's the Ubuntu-Debianish "right way".

So, what steps do I take to get Firefox updated to 1.0 that's friendly
to Ubuntu?
