That message can actually mean any number of things at a lower level.
Typically, though, it means one of two things:
1. The kernel module for your ethernet card can't be loaded correctly
or
2. You use DHCP and it couldn't get a lease for some reason
If Mandrake detected it correctly, then I would doubt that the problem
was in a missing kernel module. I would guess you are using DHCP and
can't get a lease.
Your best bet at this point is to look at the system log files. I'm
not sure where Mandrake hides all of it's syslog entries... probably
/var/log/messages or /var/log/system. What does it say about the eth0
device?
