Yeah, the problem might be that the binary drivers expect a certain
pre-compiled kernel. That would still work on debian, but it's a pain and
sucks if you need to recompile.

If the cards are using proprietary drivers ask them if they have any cards
that use Free Software drivers.

3ware and other IDE RAID controllers make their driver code available.
