It's probably a valuable learning experience to keep hacking away on
Debian until you solve all the problems but if you just want to get
stuff working try Ubuntu at: <
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/>. It is
Debian, but with a better installer. It also has less stuff, but you
can apt:get anything you really need later.
