I have a 20GB image of /dev/hda1 that I wrote to a spare harddrive
several months ago. I'm trying to "recover" it like I have done
successfully a couple of times before. For some reason, I can't get it
to work.
I put the spare IDE drive in as a secondary. I boot knoppix. The
primary IDE drive shows up as /dev/hda and the secondary shows up as
/dev/hdd.
knoppix# mount /dev/hdd1 /mnt/hdd1
knoppix# dd if=/mnt/hdd1/w2k.fat32.img of=/dev/hda
{ 35 minutes later }
I check the results:
knoppix# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
knoppix# ls /mnt/hda1
{ bunch-o-wormdows directories, looks fine }
Next, I make the first partition bootable:
knoppix# fdisk /dev/hda
{ Type 'a', '1', 'w' }
knoppix# shutdown -r now
{ Hangs after POST }
Looks like the MBR is missing. I don't have a M$ box to steal the MBR
from, so I boot a WinTooKay install CD (which takes about 1.7 eons) and
enter the "Recovery Console". I use the "FIXMBR" command and reboot.
"Invalid partition table"
I'm in the #plugaz channel on irc.freenode.net if anyone wants to take
pity on me. ;-)
