The 'emerge -f xyz && emerge xyz' is definitely the safest thing to do.

That command sequence is tried and true for decades, stick with it.

Source distribution is also safest. You control all environment
variables and Make + Build options, and your choice of compile with
"-O(1,2,3)" can make all the difference between putting along in an
ultralight or soaring in a jet.

The main reason I see that people on the forum have recommended
starting 'emerge -f' in one term (virtual console or xterm take your
pick) wait 10 to 15 minutes then start 'emerge' in another; is that
they are betting that the compile times will never be faster than the
download times.

And, if you look closely you will see that they aren't commanding
emerge NOT to downlaod any packages in the second term. Worst case
scenario is that due to download times, both terms end up downloading
packages at the same time or in inverse order. This just abuses
bandwidth and can make the whole process a lot slower in actuality.

Unless any of those people in the forum were actually watching their
firewalls or tcp/ip socket usage they probably didn't know what was
actually happening.

Myself, I would have the race happening, most compiles on my box only
take a matter minutes (dual proc with 1g ram). But download times for
single packages have taken upto several hours (and I have Cox).
