I was looking at the Gentoo forums, and someone mentioned ways to speed up Gentoo and they had something similar.
I don't remember the exact commands, but it went something like this.
In one window, execute the command you have emerge -f world, and in another window, emerge -u world. This will download the packages in the first window and then second window will do the compiling. With the locking feature the second window will wait for the first one to grab the files without having problems.
