Nothing wrong with that. It's the best way to learn. Let genkernel get
things up and running, then spend your time playing/learning instead of
installing. You probably know this, but now that you have a working
kernel, you can compile new kernels and try them out by adding them to
your bootloader. If things go wrong, you can always boot back into your
current working kernel.

Try `emerge -f` to do a "fetchonly". This will fetch the package source
and any dependencies down to your local box. Once you have everything
downloaded, go back and do a normal `emerge`.
