It's the best way to learn. Let genkernel get things up and running, then spend your time playing/learning instead of installing. You probably know this, but now that you have a working kernel, you can compile new kernels and try them out by adding them to your bootloader. Try `emerge -f` to do a "fetchonly". This will fetch the package source and any dependencies down to your local box.
