If you truly have to get data off the drive and you can use a knoppix cd
and possibly get it backed up from there. If you really need to get the
system bootable this is what I did when I accidentally blew away
the /usr/bin directory. Luckily I could still bot but couldn't do much
else.
I backed up the /usr/bin directory of a box that was almost identical,
(my laptop) and restored it onto the broken box. You should be able to
do this through knoppix and ssh.
Just remember backups are important :)
