Strange, how come emacs works differently for me?
Emacs creates .#some_open_file# for an open file that I'm editing which it can recover in case of a crash and emacs also creates a backup file, such as some_file~ which is my previous editing session. I found no reference to an .autosave directory in the manual.
One nice feature of auto-saving in emacs is that when you make a large edit to the buffer auto-saving is temporarily disabled giving you a chance to undo an accidental delete of a large block of text.
Details about auto-saving and backup files in emacs can be found here.
