Positively amazing.
Why would anyone continue to go through all this?
It is all so totally unnecessary.
Yesterday, Microsoft issued yet another in their endlessly ongoing
"security advisories" in which they urge all Microsoft users, including
both consumers and businesses, to act quickly to pat 21 NEW FLAWS
in M$ Windows software products -- 7 of which they describe as "CRITICAL."
The USA Today article can be viewed online here:
Regrettably, this article omits one crucial bit of information.
Linux users are not affected (or infected) with this kind waste
of time, money, and adversity.
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/software/2004-10-12-microsoft-flaw-patches_x.htm
A few key highlights from the article:
- "the number of serious flaws [this time] was higher than expected"
- "Microsoft recommends PC users download patches by going
to www.microsoft.com/security and signing up for its free
Windows Automatic Update service."
Yah, sure, you-betcha, so Microsoft then has
unrestricted access to all of the data on your computer.
- "For businesses it's not so easy. Corporate users must test
each patch to make sure it doesn't break ..." your computer
or "... interfere with technology ..."
- "With this group of patches, there will be more work,
spread over a longer period of time."
wonderful
- "Adding urgency: Cybercriminals typically move quickly to
reverse-engineer patches and exploit new flaws."
- "Microsoft has issued hundreds of security patches ..."
... and there is no hope that it will ever end
- "The steady stream of newly discovered flaws and patches ..."
- "Microsoft officials say ... 'Our commitment is to deliver
the best patch-management system we can' ..."
Notice, they don't say anything about fixing the problem,
they only talk about endlessly patching a permanently broken system.
In the meantime, while Microsoft continues to keep the world of
serious computing in chaos, guess what Billy Gates is doing:
- "While the company's security team released the latest set of
patches Tuesday, Gates traveled to Los Angeles to promote
Windows Media Center PCs for home entertainment use."
How remarkably conscientious.
Why bother to focus on fixing what is so seriously flawed,
when you can just go out and play and conjure up new
ways to add to the hoarded $billions?
