oh and to answer the question, I have upgraded one of my own machines
from RH 8.0 to FC-1 (now deprecated) strictly via apt-get/changing
sources/apt-get dist-upgrade and it worked. Of course, this was my
'myth-tv' experiment and I'm not sure I would have been so aggressive
with a client's server by remotely trying that if it was an important
that the server remain in service. It worked but it seems to be a risky
option.
