for the record (and I am not the most knowledgeable person about these
things), it has been reported time and time again that Microsoft support
for things like mime enclosures, digital signatures and other standards
which are publicly documented via RFC's are broken.

Your emails were tiny black font on a gray background which were
difficult to read, hardly a presentation that invited consideration of
what you were typing - at least not without extra effort. That was my
point.

I was one who used various Macintosh and Windows based email clients and
I rather liked the Outlook 2000 interface and used that primarily until
I decided that the only way to 'really learn' Linux was to use it as my
primary desktop. That meant switching to Netscape at the time for email
which I found to be acceptable but unenthusing.

As my knowledge grew - and thanks to many on this list (many of which
are low profile these days), I discovered the value of procmail
filtering and IMAP clients which permitted me to use many different
computers and yet retain my email, perfectly marked read/deleted
irrespective of which MUA I used whether on Macintosh, Windows or Linux.
What I discovered was that Outlook sucked as an IMAP client. Also,
Evolution emerged which gave me the Outlook 2000 interface,
synchronization with my Palm phone and proper IMAP support.

Everyone should feel free to choose whichever desktop, mail client they
use without feeling that they need to defend their choices. It's rather
elitist for anyone to claim their solution is better than another.
Clearly, there are open source mail clients that are more than adequate
for the task.

As for Outlook Express, it's a rather effective program. The problems
that I have seen not mentioned above are that it wants to insert replies
at the top and up until recently, was extremely cantankerous about
trying to put it's files in a directory that could be part of a roaming
profile. At least it doesn't suffer from the inevitable crash of Outlook
pst/ost files and it also works much better as an IMAP client.

Craig

ps - your wife could certainly handle Linux - it may be different but it
is entirely usable, even for Windows users.
