No - you're doing fine.
You can figure out your path by getting a terminal with your user
account (not root), and typing
echo $PATH
and it will tell you if java is included in your path. /usr/kerberos
isn't necessary for java.
and also, since your plug-in is soft-linked to the proper place in
Mozilla, it should work but just to make sure, you can start mozilla and
go to the help menu and choose about plug-ins and see if it is truly
loading.
As it was suggested otherwise, it may be a javascript or a javascript
opened window for logging in and not java run-time that is the problem
and you might want to temporarily disable pop-up window suppression and
enable javascript (if it is disabled).
Lastly, I do recall Microsoft Passport having a scheme of a picture with
skewed letters/numbers and it may require you to use a Microsoft Browser
to function. Of course, Microsoft wouldn't require you to install java.
