Yes, there will be an installfest on the 28'th. Dennis will be by with
his distro silo :)

For you, I would consider Debian or Gentoo. The upside of Gentoo is you
will be building a system from a tarball, and the instructions for doing
this are fabulous; you'll never forget adminning or system tasks again.
The downside is the time; both the time to configure and, for your 500MHz,
the time to compile. If you're considering learning adminning, however,
I'll get DCC (Distributed C Compiler) running on my 1.4G Athlon box. I
have to do this for another project, anyway.

Debian will be more risk-free; we'll have people onsite who have done
Debian installs before, and we'll have it up and running in less than
three hours at the fest. Both will also be more hassle free than RH, as
all you do to upgrade to almost-bleeding edge is use Gentoo's portage or
Debian's APT package manager.
