Subject: August Installfest

Greetings,

Can someone tell me for sure if there is an Installfest
planned for August? If so, will it be at UAT, and on
the 28th? Seems to me that will likely be between
sessions there (though I don't know that for sure), so
I'm wondering if the place will even be available.

I desperately need to upgrade my work system, a
4.5-year-old P3 @500Mhz presently stuck on Red Hat 8.0
(Psyche) and the 2.4.18 kernel. This is my *only* Linux
system, and I use it all day every day to make my
living on. I *CANNOT* afford to be down any longer than
it takes to do a reinstall from scratch, configure all
the basics, install a few necessary extras, and restore
my data.

(I do have an iMac, which will do in a desperate
pinch.)

For reference, and for those who don't know me, I'm not
a newbie. I've used Unix systems almost exclusively
since 1983, and even taught Unix/Linux at UAT for a
couple of semesters. However, I've gotten *VERY FAR*
away from the install and build sysadmin end of it, and
besides I want to go to a new distro (probably Debian),
and have never even tried any other distro but RH
except early versions of Mandrake and one other which
really stunk. I'm TERRIFIED of the idea of tackling
this project without someone who does a lot of sysadmin
work looking over my shoulder, not because I can't do
it, but because if something gets screwed up to the
point that I can't reboot or get back on the Net, which
is still about 99.9% certain with Linux systems, I will
be unemployed and without a means of support until I
get it fixed.

Maybe if I spend the rest of this month making both
mental and physical preparations I'll be able to handle
it. It's rare that my schedule even would allow me to
get to an Installfest, but too many things on my
machine are broken and out of date right now.
