First of all, you won't get Windows 98 to boot from a secondary drive, the
critter is too dumb to do that. It must be on the first drive. Now Windows
XP is supposed to be more NT-like, so it may be able to boot that from hdb1.
I'm not sure why your rescue disk didn't work. What I've done in the past
is use a win 98 boot floppy - it has to have tools installed on it,
specifically fdisk. The command fdisk /mbr is supposed to restore the master
boot record. Then at that point you'll have to reconfigure your grub or lilo
so it knows where everything is. Good luck!
