it sounds like artsd is grabbing the card and not letting go. Maybe one
of the KDE guys can tell you how to change the settings in the kcontrol
center to release it after so many seconds.
Try running xmms or whatever with the artdsp wrapper and see what
happens.

And then it should work.. Let us know what happens...
It could also be a permissions thing. You might need to change the
permissions on /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer* ... others?
Try the artsdsp first.
