Need more info. Sound card? Gnome/KDE? esd? ALSA? aRts?
I have a similar system running Gentoo. I used ALSA drivers to support
my on-board sound card. I run Gnome with ESD active. No issues, except
when an app wants "full control" (like TeamSpeak client). xmms is
configured to use esd.
