If you type (not in insert mode) a forward slash and then some characters,
vi will search for those characters and highlight them.
Could you have accidentally hit the slash and the highlight is making it
look like a black box?
If so try searching for some bogus string. That will remove the
box/highlight.
Does this make sense?
If anyone knows a better way of correcting this, please speak up.
