vi help

I'm pretty comforatble with vi but there is one thing that really bugs me.

Sometimes I get fat fingers and entire word will become inverted and I
can't for the life of me find out how to undo it. 'u' isn't it and it's
something with SHIFT 3 because that's where my fingers are when it happens.

Now I can't read 'echo'. It's just a black rectangle.
