I have installed Apache several (if not many) times. As other people have
said, installing Apache from .rpm or .deb or .whateveryourdistributionuses
will be a lot less headache than compiling it from source. If you really
want to install Apache from source, check out
http://www.apachetoolbox.com/.
It's a customizable, menu-driven tool for configuring and compiling Apache,
and it allows you to easily configure and install over 60 modules. I used
it once when I was trying to set up Tomcat with Apache, and it was pretty
slick.
