Sounds like your normal user isn't a member of the sound group.

I'm not sure which package it is (not all that familiar with GNOME), but
you can use dpkg-reconfigure to change your answer to those questions
you're asked when packages get installed. I *think* that the package in
question is esound, but I could be mistaken. If it is, just run
'dpkg-reconfigure esound' and change your answer to the question. For
getting the sound card to work, figure out which module it uses (for
this, it can be helpful to get the exact name that Linux calls it from
/proc/pci and take that string to Google), and add the name of that
module to /etc/modules. (You'll want to "modprobe modulename" while
you're at it, as otherwise you would need to reboot, and that would be
just silly.)
